Coming soon! Our latest documentary film, Krieghoff or the studio of a popular artist, writen and directed by Jean Roy, will soon be distributed by the National Film Board of Canada.
Cornelius Krieghoff (born in Amsterdam in 1815 and died in Chicago in 1872) was one of the first painters to have presented “Canadian subjects”. In 1847, at the time of the very first art exposition in Montreal, his paintings depicted images of the country and scenes of every day life that amazed and delighted the public. Yet the art lovers of the era swore only by the European models! The free and tumultuous life that he led also intrigued many. Having come from northern Europe, the self-taught painter rapidly adapted himself to Canadian mores. He actively took part in Montreal's artistic milieu, then of that in Quebec, where he lived his prosperous years. His painting never attained unanimous approval. For 150 years, it was often critiqued, and it became shaped by all the views taken of it. This other history of the work, that which survived the artist, is at the heart of our subject matter. Was Krieghoff a documentary painter? A commercial artist? Did his genre paintings denigrate French Canadians and First Nations People? What, in his life and work, gave rise to the legend? See it soon…
